Problems associated with the use of Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (IE8)

A number of people have reported that they have experienced random problems when using the Quins website.  The circumstances have been difficult to track down but it transpires that the problems are only being experienced by people using Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (IE8).

Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8 without ensuring that it is backwards compatible with their earlier browsers when a standard install is performed.  If you are using IE8 and are experiencing problems when visiting one or more websites you should read the following recommendations that are provided by Microsoft on their support website. Their recommendations will provide you with a number of ways to resolve the by making configuration changes to IE8 on your computer.  The Quins website is not the only site where you will experience problems when using IE8.

Your webmaster has enough work to do in maintaining the Quins website without Microsoft issuing software that causes our users problems and your webmaster a significant amount of additional effort to research and solve the problems that they have introduced. These problems do not exist for  users who choose to use alternative and freely available web browsers such as Firefox, Safari or Opera.  If you want my recommendation you would be well advised to switch from Microsoft IE8 and adopt Firefox. Firefox provides better features than IE8 and functions well on Windows, Macintosh and Linux systems.  Installation of any of these alternative browsers will preserve your IE8 bookmarks and favourites as well as your home page. You can download these browsers from the following sites:

We will continue to monitor forums to apply software patches as and when they become available.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) restrictions

After a fair amount of research it appears that Microsoft's new version of Internet Explorer (Version 8) has a restriction of thirty CSS files that can open at one time.  This restiction may or may not be reasonable but when a user of IE8 views a site with more than 30 CSS files open they will experience strange rendering of some webpages which are not able to use the CSS that the web designer intended as a result of the Microsoft restriction.

This was the case on the Harlequin website and a fix has been installed to overcome the problems introduced by Microsoft for those of our users who installed Microsoft IE8 (probably without even knowing that they had done so).  This issue did not exist in Microsoft IE7.
