Harlequin Rugby Club

End of the first round
The first round has concluded with all four senior teams having consolidated themselves in promising positions after a solid start to the season. Five successive victories have seen our 1st Grade secure second position on the ladder. Assisted by a slew of bonus points, we are just four points behind the undefeated Southern Districts. Some free-flowing rugby in recent weeks has seen the 1st XV pile on the tries to accumulate 223 points - 60 more than the next highest scoring team. The next three weeks will go a long way to defining our season as we will be seriously tested as we take on Souths (1st), Box Hill (3rd) and Melbourne (4th).

Our 2nd XV is cruising along nicely having chalked up five wins to also be in second place on the ladder whilst the Thirds lie fifth with three wins, a draw and three losses. The Colts, meanwhile, slipped to third place on the ladder following their second loss of the season last Thursday night against a very strong Moorabbin team.

Next Saturday see all four of our senior teams playing at home against Souths. Due to the vagaries of the fixturing system, this is the only time this season we are drawn to play against a single club in all four grades on one day. It promises to be a great day of rugby.

Wallabies & Quins!
The Wallabies will be training at Ashwood on the afternoon of Monday 22 July in preparation for the Bledisloe Cup match. The complete squad will train on our field from 3.30 - 4.30pm and will then make themselves available to sign autographs, give away showbags, etc from 4.30 - 5.00pm. There will be a free barbecue and a skills session conducted by the VRU for junior players. It promises to be a great afternoon for our Club!

Sportsmanship
The Department of Sport and Recreation has recently released its Code of Conduct for Community Sport. The intention of the Code is to outline behaviours that are expected of every person involved in community sport, as well as identifying the types of behaviours that will not be tolerated. Whilst our Club continues to maintain very high standards in this area, the release of the Code, which appears below, is a timely reminder to all in the rugby community to ensure that the game is played and supported in the right spirit.

Code of Conduct

Every person: spectator, player, club member, official, participant, administrator, coach, parent or member of the community involved with the sport, should work to ensure:

  • inclusion of every person regardless of their age, gender or sexual orientation
  • inclusion of every person regardless of their race, culture or religion
  • opportunities for people of all abilities to participate in the sport and develop to their full potential
  • respect is shown towards others, the club and the broader community
  • a safe and inclusive environment for all
  • elimination of violent and abusive behaviour
  • protection from sexual harassment or intimidation.

This Code applies to community sport, training and club sanctioned activities.

A Nice Moment
The Victorian Schoolboys have been training at Quins on Wednesday nights in the lead up to the National Carnival. Last Wednesday, one lad accidentally left his bag containing his boots, training gear and wallet in our sheds. Relieved to find his bag exactly where he left it and with his wallet and all of his belongings safe and intact, the young bloke (who is not yet a Quin) said, 'If I was going to leave my bag anywhere, I'm glad it was at the Harlequin Club.
