Premier Division - Round 1 (2nd April, 2011)
Quins started the season with a tough assignment playing Melbourne away who were the premiers from 2010 in all 3 grades.
1st Grade played for the annual Bott Bolton Trophy and with the wind at their back Quins burst out of the blocks playing one of the most dominating halves of rugby against Melbourne the club has ever played to have a 32-0 lead at the half. Debutant Jack North started the scoring with an early try, Josh Moore then converted 2 penalty opportunities before Ewen Campbell bag a doubled in quick succession with an intercept try followed by a charge down try. The half was rounded out with some smart work by Brendan Goodwin to send Josh Moore over under the posts. Melbourne turned at the half a more committed team with the wind at their backs and scored 2 quick tries from some soft Quins defence started to cause concerns. Quins steady with a penalty and then a try to Osea Valentini, before 2 more Melbourne tries got them within 14 points but again Quins steadied with a penalty to Josh Moore. Unfortunately half Brendan Goodwin was sent off late in the game and will require a trip to the judiciary on Wednesday night. A number of strong performances with Mace Poloie, Brendan Norris and Tom Egan strong in the pack and Shaun Samaranayake doing well in the backs.
2nd Grade fought a traditionally tough Quins/Melbourne game and trailed the majority of the game 12-6 after failing to capitalize on the wind in the first half. For 10-15mins the team had strong field position in the second half but could not capitalize and Melbourne scored 2 quick tries in the last 15mins to take the game away before Quins responded with a late try.
3rd Grade came up against a strong Melbourne from the outset and struggled in the game going down 62-12. The guys tried hard and never gave up, but some work is needed this week on the training paddock.
The QUADS also had a run in a game against Melbourne and went down 39-0, the team was put together just before the game and tried hard and will be better for the run.
