I am writing this from Fremantle on a beautiful day with a glass of Margaret River wine at hand and a view over the town towards Rottnest Island. It's hard to imagine such dedication to duty!
It is now a couple of weeks since we had a wonderful day at the Portsea Golf Club at the invitation of Andrew and Marylin (hmmm - I'm sure I have that wrong) Gregory. Twenty dedicated golfers took on the course and, with the exception of the Gregory's home club advantage, I think it's fair to say that the course won (I'll put the results up on the website when I get back to Melbourne).
The main event was won by Alan Soutar with a score of 35 stableford points and Andrew Gregory was the best guest with 42 points (Andrew - make sure you put that card in!).
Rosebud Country Club (30th May)
Our next golf day is at the Rosebud Country Club on Sunday 30th May. We were to play there last year only to encounter the heaviest rain that we have had and the only golf day that I can remember which we have called off due to bad weather. Four stalwarts played the first nine holes (Tom & Sally Chapman, Andy Corp and David Bray) but called it a day when the rain got the better of them. Details of the day will be on the website as soon as I return but I would be keen to get an idea of numbers as soon as possible.
Please email me as soon as possible to indicate whether you plan to join us at Rosebud.
Changes to the Golf Calendar
I still need to confirm some of the venues and will keep you informed of any changes as soon as I am aware of them.
I had initially planned to hold the Christmas function at Flinders with a format similar to last year. However Stan and Lindi Shaw have very kindly offered to hold the Christmas function at their home. The date remains the same but we will now play at Waterford Valley Golf Club (Helen Noble's home club). Details will be posted on the website closer to the date.
Mention of Helen makes me think that we ought to congratulate Helen on the way that she has improved so dramatically. She is now playing off a handicap of 8 which is a remarkable achievement. Fortunately our 'faceless handicapper' has managed to handicap her out of consideration in the Quins Golf Days and is likely to do the same to Alan Soutar if he continues his winning ways.
Dennis Crawford Cup
The weekend of the Dennis Crawford Cup has been changed so that we avoid a clash with the Harlequin Annual Dinner which will be held on Friday 25th September. There are not many weekends left this year so we have changed the date of the DCC to 19th September, 2010.
This will be the third time we have held the event at the Bowral Golf Club and I think it's fair to say that the weekends have been a great success. The inugural winner of the Cup was the Melbourne team but our Sydney colleagues (ably supported by players from New Zealand, Hong Kong and Queensland) won the cup past year. We need the cup back in Melbourne where it belongs. So can the Melbourne contingent please mark the weekend in their diaries now!
Good golfing and I hope to see you at Rosebud on 30th May.
All the best
