Summer Training Program
Submitted by Brock Parker on 19 September 2011 - 3:30pmQuins Colts Premiers
Submitted by Brock Parker on 8 September 2011 - 1:11amQuins won our first Colts premiership since 1998 with a tense 27-24 win over Endeavour Hills. Quins started well with Nick Carter scoring an early tough forward drive try to get Quins on the front foot.
The lead changed a number of times from this point with the big Endeavour Hills pack driving through Quins whilst Quins looked to spread the ball wide to the speed man. Justin Marsters scored as did Chris Leuamona who scored a hard running try and was stopped short for a second soon after.
Endeavour Hills continued to hit back and with Quins leading 20-17 with 10 minutes remaining and with a certain penalty in front of the posts a quick tap was taken by Andrew Blannin with what seemed to be the match winning try scored in the corner by Justin Tavae - but after consultation it was ruled a knock-on over the line and from the next scrum End Hills went the length of the field to take a 24-20 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining. The Quins boys held their nerve, and Justin Masters showed the class act he is once again by scoring under the posts for Quins to lead 27-24. End Hills made one final surge, Quins defended stoutly and the final whistle was blown with End Hills camped on attack in the Quins 22.
Chris Leauamona was awarded man of the match and Andrew Blannin was awarded the competitions Colts Player of the Year and also Colts Top Point Scorer.
Congratulations to the boys and the coaching and management team on a great effort.
2nd Grade Grand Final Heartbreak
Submitted by Brock Parker on 8 September 2011 - 12:50amThe Quins 2nd Grade team loss their Grand Final against Melbourne University 30-31 with the team deep on attack when the final whistle blew.
Scoring the try of the match Quins took a handy 10-0 lead before University hit with a try and as the teams went tit for tat in scoring through the first half. The decisive moment came in the 5 minutes before half time when Uni scored 2 intercept tries to jump out to a 24-13 lead over Quins. Some powerful substitutions in the 2nd half doe Uni made the first 15 minutes tough and they scored again to lead 31-13 when the Quins revival commenced. Three tries in the last 15 minutes saw Quins close the gap to 31-30, and the team had a number of good attacking opportunities in the final 5 minutes but were unable to turn them into points.
Fine games to Richie Henderson at 9 and the skipper Dan Henry worked hard all game.
2nd Grade & Colts into Grand Final
Submitted by Brock Parker on 29 August 2011 - 1:01pmBoth 2nd Grade and the Colts have qualified for the Grand Final this Saturday at Box Hill RC with 3rd Grade going agonizingly close to also qualifying.
2nd Grade defeated Moorabbin 36-21 to earn their spot against Melbourne University in the Grand Final who upset Melbourne in the other Semi Final (Melbourne had not lost a game all season). Michael Shadbolt grabbed another two tries to add to his seasojn tally of 26 tries but the crucial moment came when Nathan Redfern stripped the ball from a Moorabbin player 10m out and dashed over for a try. The Rams dropped their heads at this moment and Quins went onto a comfortable lead with the Rams scoring 2 late tries to bring the score closer than it actually was.
Colts battled hard early against a hard working Melbourne outfit to only lead 7-3 at the break before the team kicked into gear with some tries to the outside backs stretching the final scoreline to 35-8 and earning them a rematch with Endeavour Hills who defeated them last week in the Major Semi.
3rd Grade had a fantastic first half to lead the Minor Premiers Melbourne 21-0 at the half - but some ill discipline and missed tackles in the 2nd half let Melbourne back in the game and they finally ran over the top to win 24-31. It was a courageous effort by the guys in 3rd Grade and something to build on further for next year.
